Hurricane Sandys Damage to Our Area, Huntington and Melville!

Normally we would post a story about dogs and pets, but since we were hit by Hurricane Sandy, we thought everyone would like to see the damage this storm has done to our area. (South Huntington and Melville)
We have 29 photos here, so it may take a few seconds to load.
Of course our girl Penny has to check out the scene to make sure everything is alright.
Please leave comments for us at the bottom of this blog or email us.
By the way, the photo with the stop sign is my favorite, its telling Hurricane Sandy to please stop.

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb? Very funny!

Golden Retriever:
The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

Border Collie:
Just one. And then I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to code.

You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp!

Make me.

Oh, me, me!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb? Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Can I?

Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he’s busy.

Jack Russell Terrier:
I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture.

I’ll just blow in the Border Collie’s ear and he’ll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

Cocker Spaniel:
Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark if I want to.

Doberman Pinscher:
While it’s dark, I’m going to sleep on the couch.

Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.

Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

I see it, there it is, there it is, right there.

It isn’t moving. Who cares?

Australian Shepherd:
First, I’ll put all the light bulbs in a little circle ....

Old English Sheep Dog:
Light bulb? I’m sorry, but I don’t see a light bulb?

German Shepherd:
Alright, everyone stop where you are! Who busted the light? I SAID, “STOP WHERE YOU ARE!!!

Hound Dog:

Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So the question is: How long will it be before I can expect light?

Photographer Captures Tender Moment Between Man And His Sick Dog In Lake Superior

man dog lake suprerior photo
John Unger cradles his 19-year-old dog, Schoep, in the waters of Lake Superior

They say a dog is a man's best friend, but to John Unger, a Wisconsin resident, his dog, Schoep, means everything.

Unger adopted Schoep, named after the famous Wisconsin ice cream, when he was just a puppy, and the two have been together ever since. Now, at 19 years old, Schoep has arthritis and has trouble sleeping, the Pioneer Press reports. Unger found that water is therapeutic for his pained buddy, so he takes Schoep into Lake Superior and lulls him to sleep.

Photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, owner of Stonehouse Photography and a friend of Unger's, decided to capture the relationship between the man and his dog down by the water.

1,200 Dogs Saved from Meat Trucks: A Rush to Help Rescuers

1,200 Dogs Saved from Meat Trucks: A Rush to Help Rescuers

by  August 4, 2012 11:20 pm

More than 1,200 dogs have been intercepted in two separate raids by Thai coalition forces. The Royal Thai Police, the Royal Thai Navy Border Patrol and members of the Animal Activists Alliance Thailand have arrested international dog meat smugglers in the Ban Phang District of Nakorn Phanom Province. On Saturday alone, a convoy with around 800 dogs was intercepted late at night. The dogs had been kept in the jungle for several days without food and water and are very weak.
1,200 dogs rescued and in need of care

Last August, Soi Dogs, a non profit rescue group based in Thailand, launched its Trade of Shame campaign to bring to an end to the inhumane and barbaric dog meat trade. The campaign has and will continue to concentrate on the core of the problem; that being ending the trade altogether through the stronger enforcement of existing laws and the introduction of stronger legislation. Since the campaign’s start a year ago, more arrests of smugglers have been made than in the preceding 15 years. But, this has presented another enormous challenge – how to care for the literally thousands of dogs recovered during these arrests.
The scale of the problem is massive and well beyond the normal operating budget of Soi Dogs. Help is urgently needed to shelter and treat the rescued dogs and also help bring an end to the illegal dog meat trade.
To help, please visit the Soi Dogs website here.

Victory! Massachusetts Bans BSL, Overhauls Animal Protection Laws

Victory! Massachusetts Bans BSL, Overhauls Animal Protection Laws

by  - August 3, 2012 11:41 pm
On Thursday, Governor Deval Patrick signed “An Act Further Regulating Animal Control” into law, which will update laws that have been on the books for decades and create stronger, more comprehensive animal protection laws in a variety of areas.
“For years, organizations, individuals, and legislators have been seeking a comprehensive revision of Chapter 140, relating to animals; S. 2192 is the result of years of stakeholder discussions,” said Kara Holmquist, Director of Advocacy, MSPCA-Angell. “We are thrilled to see this important bill become law and believe it will make important progress in safeguarding both animals and the public.”
Provisions in this bill will help animals in a few ways, most notably by:
  • Setting up a Homeless Animal Prevention and Care Fund to help cover veterinary care and spay/neuter for homeless dogs and cats to reduce their numbers and reduce costs for cities, in addition to assisting low-income pet owners with vaccinations and spay/neuter. Residents will be able to voluntarily donate to the fund through their state tax returns.
  • Including pets in restraining orders to protect both people and animals from domestic violence and encourage victims of abuse to seek help without having to worry about what will happen if they leave a pet behind.
  • Creating categories for kennel licensing ranging from residential to commercial.
  • Requiring health certificates for dogs and cats coming into the state.
  • Requiring training for animal control officers (ACO), which has not been mandatory, and ensuring they are not also licensed animal dealers who could potentially turn over animals to research facilities. ACOs will be overseen by the Department of Agricultural Resources and will be trained in a number of areas ranging from animal capture techniques and cruelty statutes to animal health inspector duties.
  • Improving the dangerous dog law to prohibit discrimination against any breed.
  • Increasing fines for animal cruelty.
  • Adding provisions to enforce the spay/neuter deposit law for adopted animals to ensure they can’t reproduce by requiring a written agreement and increasing the deposit, which is collected if animals are adopted out without being spayed/neutered.
While it’s unclear what will happen in cities that have breed bans in place as of now, some may try to keep them by grandfathering themselves in or using the home rule, it’s still great to see another state take a stand against BSL.
“The breed-specific things is a quick reaction to a complex problem,” said Sen. Mark C.W. Montigny, a champion of the legislation. “What we really need is a major crackdown on the people who are breeding (pit bulls) and training them to be aggressive.
“They are beautiful, loving dogs if not mistreated by ugly, mean human beings,” he said, adding that the ban on BSL will also remove any incentive evildoers have from targeting another breed.
Along with the MSPCA-Angell, this legislation was also supported by the Animal Rescue League of Boston, the Department of Agricultural Resources, the Animal Control Officers Association of Massachusetts (ACOAM) and the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association.

Powerful Woman Turns ‘Speck of Gold’ into Haven for Animals

Powerful Woman Turns ‘Speck of Gold’ into Haven for Animals

Written by Marianne Willemse of Love Animal House in Thailand
In the rolling hills 13 kms north of Chiang Mai, a speck of gold dust barely visible on Google Earth has become a haven for over 100 abandoned pets and abused farm animals. We have 30 cattle and buffalo, rescued from slaughterhouses. Abandoned and abused dogs and cats are always “flying” over the gate. And then there’s the illegal dog meat market. We’ve been on its tail for 6 years now, rescuing more than 1,000 dogs and inching toward a law that we are told will be fast tracked once 50,000 Thai nationals sign the petition.
