Hurricane Sandys Damage to Our Area, Huntington and Melville!

Normally we would post a story about dogs and pets, but since we were hit by Hurricane Sandy, we thought everyone would like to see the damage this storm has done to our area. (South Huntington and Melville)
We have 29 photos here, so it may take a few seconds to load.
Of course our girl Penny has to check out the scene to make sure everything is alright.
Please leave comments for us at the bottom of this blog or email us.
By the way, the photo with the stop sign is my favorite, its telling Hurricane Sandy to please stop.

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb? Very funny!

Golden Retriever:
The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

Border Collie:
Just one. And then I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to code.

Dachshund:
You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler:
Make me.

Lab:
Oh, me, me!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb? Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Can I?

Malamute:
Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he’s busy.

Jack Russell Terrier:
I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture.

Poodle:
I’ll just blow in the Border Collie’s ear and he’ll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

Cocker Spaniel:
Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark if I want to.

Doberman Pinscher:
While it’s dark, I’m going to sleep on the couch.

Boxer:
Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

Mastiff:
Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.

Chihuahua:
Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

Pointer:
I see it, there it is, there it is, right there.

Greyhound:
It isn’t moving. Who cares?

Australian Shepherd:
First, I’ll put all the light bulbs in a little circle ....

Old English Sheep Dog:
Light bulb? I’m sorry, but I don’t see a light bulb?

German Shepherd:
Alright, everyone stop where you are! Who busted the light? I SAID, “STOP WHERE YOU ARE!!!

Hound Dog:
ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Cat:
Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So the question is: How long will it be before I can expect light?

Mushroom-Based Medicine Could Help Dogs Survive Cancer

Cancer is one of the most feared diagnoses in the world. As humans we sometimes forget that we’re not the only ones to face this difficult and deadly disease. Pets, our four-legged family members, are at risk for several different types of cancer, including breast cancer, bone cancer, skin cancer, cancer of the mouth, and cancer of the lymphatic system

Photographer Captures Tender Moment Between Man And His Sick Dog In Lake Superior

man dog lake suprerior photo
John Unger cradles his 19-year-old dog, Schoep, in the waters of Lake Superior

They say a dog is a man's best friend, but to John Unger, a Wisconsin resident, his dog, Schoep, means everything.

Unger adopted Schoep, named after the famous Wisconsin ice cream, when he was just a puppy, and the two have been together ever since. Now, at 19 years old, Schoep has arthritis and has trouble sleeping, the Pioneer Press reports. Unger found that water is therapeutic for his pained buddy, so he takes Schoep into Lake Superior and lulls him to sleep.

Photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, owner of Stonehouse Photography and a friend of Unger's, decided to capture the relationship between the man and his dog down by the water.

1,200 Dogs Saved from Meat Trucks: A Rush to Help Rescuers

1,200 Dogs Saved from Meat Trucks: A Rush to Help Rescuers

by  August 4, 2012 11:20 pm

More than 1,200 dogs have been intercepted in two separate raids by Thai coalition forces. The Royal Thai Police, the Royal Thai Navy Border Patrol and members of the Animal Activists Alliance Thailand have arrested international dog meat smugglers in the Ban Phang District of Nakorn Phanom Province. On Saturday alone, a convoy with around 800 dogs was intercepted late at night. The dogs had been kept in the jungle for several days without food and water and are very weak.
1,200 dogs rescued and in need of care

Last August, Soi Dogs, a non profit rescue group based in Thailand, launched its Trade of Shame campaign to bring to an end to the inhumane and barbaric dog meat trade. The campaign has and will continue to concentrate on the core of the problem; that being ending the trade altogether through the stronger enforcement of existing laws and the introduction of stronger legislation. Since the campaign’s start a year ago, more arrests of smugglers have been made than in the preceding 15 years. But, this has presented another enormous challenge – how to care for the literally thousands of dogs recovered during these arrests.
The scale of the problem is massive and well beyond the normal operating budget of Soi Dogs. Help is urgently needed to shelter and treat the rescued dogs and also help bring an end to the illegal dog meat trade.
To help, please visit the Soi Dogs website here.
Brought to you by the Harmony Fund international animal rescue teams.
