Diamond Pet Food hit with first lawsuit, others sure to follow

A lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of a two-month-old baby boy who was hospitalized after contracting a dangerous infection from the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis, the same bacteria responsible for the nationwide recall of over 155 pet food formulas made by Diamond Pet Food.

FDA Investigating a Second Diamond Pet Foods Plant Due to Salmonella!

Diamond Pet Food recall       dog-empty-bowl-350.jpg

The Diamond Pet Foods recall just seems to get uglier and uglier by the day. The recall, first announced in April, has grown to include a number of dog and cat foods manufactured at their Gaston, South Carolina plant. However, the most recent addition to the recall was for some of their Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula manufactured in their Meta, Missouri plant. Now the FDA is investigating that plant as well. (Diamond has another plant in California. There’s no word yet of recalls of food coming of that plant.)
All of the food recalled has been due to Salmonella. But, according to the FDA, there are two different strains of Salmonella involved. Laura Alvey, of the FDA, spoke with Food Safety News:
U.S. Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Laura Alvey has told Food Safety News that the Salmonella contamination found at Diamond’s Meta, Missouri plant is not from the same strain as that of the Gaston, South Carolina plant. The contamination at the Missouri plant comes from Salmonella Liverpool, while the South Carolina plant — connected to all products except those in the most recent recall expansion — has been contaminated by Salmonella Infantis.
Alvey also said that the Missouri plant has now been included in the FDA’s ongoing investigation into the Diamond Pet Foods Salmonella outbreak and recall.

What Every Fur Parent Should Know About Doggy Day Care

We had been thinking of putting the dogs in doggy day care for a change; but now that we know that Sydney is only happy with her pack of friends, we wouldn’t want to cause her any stress. And when I heard about my friend’s experience (Heather of RockStew Blog) with doggy day care, I felt like I should look a little deeper.

Diamond Pet Foods to grieving pet parent with dead dog: show us the proof or get lost

That is, unless you have a signed letter from your veterinarian saying your dog died due to a Salmonella infection. Because a clinical diagnosis isn’t good enough for Diamond, they are demanding laboratory tests confirming the presence of the Salmonella bacteria in pets; which is precisely what a woman, whose dog died after eating a recalled dog food, was told by Diamond Pet Foods.

New Russian Shelter Shines Love on Homeless Animals

New Russian Shelter Shines Love on Homeless Animals

Written by Maria Varentsova and Nelly Mihill

This winter turned out to be extra cold in Astrakhan, Russia; some days it was -30 degrees C. We remember how we started to feel cold before we even left the building, even though we were wrapped up in so many layers. We were a regular witness to so many stray animals covered in frost trying to dig anything remotely edible from under tens of inches of thick Russian snow. They would run up to us and stare at us with their eyes full of sadness and so much hardship they have to go through every day. Dogs would trustingly start to wag their tails, hoping for some compassion from people.

The Scoop on Poop: Do you dump and run?

Have you ever dumped your dog’s poop bag in a neighbor’s trash bin if it is out when you walk by?
If you are a dog owner, would you mind if someone dumped their dog’s poop bag in your trash bin?
And, you non-dog owners (if there are any non-dog owners actually read this blog), would you care if someone dumped their poop bag in your trash?

San Francisco dog judge gives dogs their day in court

San Francisco is known as one of the most dog-friendly cities in the world. In the city of 805,000 the number of dogs is greater than the number of children. And dog owners have serious political clout.
But sometimes dogs can be vicious and in the public interest it is the duty of police officer John Denny to decide the fate of the animal and the owner.
Rather than having multiple judges with multiple prejudices rule on multiple cases, Denny, a 28-year veteran has been assigned all dog hearings. This system assures the dog and the owner that they will be given a fair day in court. Dogs are judged on behavior, not looks.
Up until the year 2001, people in San Francisco rarely reported dog bites and little was done to keep track of vicious dogs. But in 2001, Diane Whipple, a 33-year-old lacrosse coach, was mauled to death in the lobby of her apartment building by two Presa Canarios.
It turned out that the two dogs had terrorized people on 18 different occasions, but no one ever filed a police report. There was obviously a need for a full-time police unit to protect the public and give a fair hearing to the dogs.
Denny investigates about 450 cases a year and holds around 120 hearings. Only about 15 percent of the dogs are deemed “vicious and dangerous.”
Those dogs have to be microchipped and wear a special red flag. They must be leashed and muzzled in public and the owner must submit to surprise inspections. Owners have to post warning signs at their homes and may be required to attend obedience classes.
After the first violation the dog and owner are put on probation for three years. If the owners break one of the rules, their dogs can be destroyed. Fewer than ten dogs a year have had to be destroyed.
Denny loves the chance his job gives him to correct animal and human behavior before it turns violent.
"One reason I became an officer is to bring compassion to the job," he said. "I'm here to put people at ease. People are very upset about the thought of losing their dogs, and 99 percent of the time, we can come up with a solution." More information

Victory! Cincinnati Repeals Breed Ban

Victory! Cincinnati Repeals Breed Ban

Dog lovers and animal advocates finally saw a victory yesterday when the Cincinnati City Council in Ohio voted 8-1 to repeal language in the city’s vicious dog ordinance that made owning a pit bull within city limits illegal.

“It’s fantastic. It’s been a long effort, but we’ve had some great supporters from all across the country … that’s had an overwhelming affect on Council. Dog owners, of pit bulls or not, have flooded Council with requests to change the law,” said Jim Tomaszewski, SPCA Cincinnati trustee and lobbyist for the removal of the city’s BSL.

The ban had been in effect since 2003 under the guise of public safety and was kept despite an amendment to state laws last February that changed the definition of vicious dogs so that they would no no longer be defined solely based on looks.

Fortunately, advocates kept fighting for the repeal arguing that it was wasting law enforcement’s time, along with a lot of taxpayer money spent on supporting confiscated dogs while their cases were pending and prosecuting the few people who kept pit bulls, in addition to the fact that it adversely affects good dogs and responsible owners.

A Task Force for the Humane Treatment of Animals will also be created to crack down on animal abusers and promote humane care.

FDA Releases Diamond Pet Foods Preliminary Inspection Report

Late this afternoon, FDA posted the Inspectional Observations report (Form 483 report) that was handed to the Plant Manager of Diamond Pet Foods in Gaston, South Carolina at the end of a week-long inspection.
The inspection, which was initiated on April 12th as a result of an outbreak of Salmonella Infantis infections in the USA and Canada traced to contaminated pet food manufactured at the facility, produced four significant observations:
OBSERVATION 1
All reasonable precautions are not taken to ensure that production procedures do not contribute contamination from any source.
Specifically, no microbiological analysis is conducted or there is no assurance that incoming animal fat will not introduce pathogens into their production and cause contamination of finished product. Also, the firm’s current sampling procedure for animal digest does (?) preclude potential for adulteration after sampling and during storage in warehouse. On 4/13/12, an employee was observed touching in-line fat filter and oil with bare hands.
OBSERVATION 2
Failure to provide hand washing and hand sanitizing facilities at each location in the plant where needed.
Specifically, there are no facilities for hand washing or hand sanitizing in the production areas where there is direct contact with exposed finished feed/food.
OBSERVATION 3
Failure to maintain equipment, containers and utensils used to convey, hold, and store food in a manner that protects against contamination.
Specifically, paddles in conveyor (South or Middle conveyor leading to the screeners going to packaging) were observed to have gouges and cuts, which exhibited feed residues. The damage to the paddles may allow for harborage areas for microorganisms and are difficult to clean and sanitize.
OBSERVATION 4
Failure to maintain equipment so as to facilitate cleaning of the equipment.
Specifically, firm utilizes cardboard, duct tape, and other non cleanable surfaces on equipment. These materials were observed to have residues adhering. The foam gaskets around access doors to the bucket elevators were observed in deteriorating condition and exhibited an accumulation of feed residues and dust.
This is what Diamond Pet Foods has to say about its own quality program:
  • Each of our products undergoes a rigorous quality control process prior to shipment, including 141 ingredient tests and 10 final product quality and safety checks.
  • Diamond uses only the highest-quality ingredients.
  • Every Diamond Pet Foods product is Precision Formulated™ for content, quality, consistency and uniformity.
  • Diamond is audited regularly by a highly respected independent laboratory for food safety, quality and palatability.
  • We only sell products that we would be proud to feed to our own pets.
Can anyone tell me how this company, with its self-proclaimed attention to product quality and safety, managed to miss the ongoing presence of Salmonella Infantis in its finished products for at least four months?
Can anyone tell me how the “highly respected independent laboratory that audits the company on a regular basis missed the cardboard and duct tape used on equipment in the Gaston plant, and also missed the deteriorating gaskets and the damaged paddles?
And, can anyone tell me why the FDA report does not mention sampling the production environment, ingredients or finished products as part of their week-long inspection?
There are other things we still don’t know, including:
  1. How many pets have become infected as a result of eating the contaminated food? Have any of the infected pets died?
  2. Where else – other than the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico – was the recalled pet food distributed? Asia? Europe? Latin America? The Caribbean? Neither FDA nor Diamond has answered that question yet.
  3. Why was December 9, 2011 chosen as the earliest production date for recall? The oldest batch of food in which a government lab found Salmonella was produced January 3-4, 2012. This suggests that the contamination was present somewhere in the production environment for five months without being detected by the company’s quality assurance program.
Here – once more – are some things consumers in Canada, the USA and elsewhere can do to protect themselves, their families, and their pets from becoming statistics in this outbreak:
  • Check your supply of pet food to see whether it is affected by the recall. If it is on the recall list, either throw it away or return the unused portion to the retailer. Do not assume that your pet food is safe if your state or country was not mentioned on the recall distribution list.
  • If you have handled one of the recalled products and you develop symptoms of Salmonella (stomach ache, diarrhea, etc), seek immediate medical attention and mention the possible link to pet food.
  • If your dog or cat was fed one of the recalled products and develops symptoms of gastrointestinal illness (vomiting or diarrhea), seek immediate veterinary attention. Ask your veterinarian to test your pet for Salmonella. If the test is positive, you or your veterinarian should contact FDA immediately to have the unused portion of the pet food tested. Direct your veterinarian to the CDC web site for information on how to proceed.
  • Review the FDA Tips for Preventing Foodborne Illness Associated with Pet Food and Pet Treats, and follow its recommendations to keep your family and your pets safe.
  • Monitor eFoodAlert’s Diamond Pet Foods, Etc. Recalls – 2012 page. It will be updated as more information becomes available.
Above all, be aware that dogs may be infected with Salmonella - and may shed the bacteria in their stool - without showing any outward symptoms of illness. If your pet has consumed a Diamond Pet Foods dry dog food, be especially careful to wash your hands after handling the animal, and supervise closely any interaction between children and your pet.

Diamond’s troubled plant is up and running again, despite not having found the cause of the contamination

The Diamond plant responsible for the largest pet food recall since 2007 is back in business today. The FDA gave it the thumbs up after Diamond gave it a good scrubbing.
Diamond Pet Foods resumed production at its troubled Gaston, S.C., plant after conducting a cleaning and testing operation at the facility, according to a U.S. government spokeswoman.

Formerly Doomed Dog Becomes Amazing Adventurer

Bourbon was rescued from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and brought to the Hamilton County Humane Society in Ohio. Due to his cage aggression, nobody wanted to adopt him and he was scheduled for euthanasia, but Bourbon bonded with a kennel worker who found a place for him with Sheltered Paws, a rescue group that supports Hamilton County Humane Society. After two unsuccessful foster home placements, he came to us as a last chance for fostering.

Woman Runs Into Midnight Storm and Brings Dog to Warm Bed

Woman Runs Into Midnight Storm and Brings Dog to Warm Bed

Written by Rebecca Dysievick of Ontario, Canada
While on vacation in Belize, I came across a little dog who was kept behind our rental cabin. She was the owner’s dog and was not shown much love or attention. She was kept tied to a raised shed away from the family with a low sided box to lay in and dirty bowls for food and water. She was half the weight she should have been and absolutely looked depressed.
When approached, she would barely wag her tail and her eyes lacked all happiness. I started saving food from my meals and brought it to her after nightfall when the family wouldn’t see me. When I approached with my flashlight, I could hear her little gums snapping at the hoard of mosquitoes she couldn’t escape from.
One night we had a very strong rain and wind storm. I lay in bed wide awake thinking of her outside. I jumped out of bed, went outside, unhooked her leash and brought her in our cabin for the night. She quietly curled up on the bed and didn’t make a peep. I was smitten and it was so hard to put her back by the shed the next morning, but I didn’t want to anger the owner.

Down by the River: Couple Stops Car to Help Lost Dog

Down by the River: Couple Stops Car to Help Lost Dog

Written by Jessica Painter of Albany, New York
The other night on our way home, we saw what looked like a Rottweiler wandering near the river off the highway between exits 28 & 29 of I90 West. Given that it is not the norm to see a dog down there, we decided to pull off at a small rest stop and investigate. We found a spot where we could get through the fence and go down near the water. Sure enough, it was a Rottweiler. We found his tracks all over the place down there — it looked like he’d been there for a little bit. We called the State Police, who then reached out to the dog warden. Turns out that the dog had been there since the day before. The police officer kept trying to find him but couldn’t.
The dog wouldn’t approach us. He seemed really nervous. So I suggested to my husband Ed that we sit on a log down near the water and ignore him and eventually he would become comfortable enough to approach us. Sure enough, he did. Once he came over, he started whining — almost needy. He took to Ed right away and Ed just kept talking to him and petting him and trying to comfort him. Eventually, he sat right down next to Ed. He didn’t seem to like me much; every time I looked at him, he started growling. That’s okay — I am sure he was just very scared.

Canidae recalled due to salmonella
Another Diamond Pet Food recall weighs in, this one from Canidae:
CANIDAE wishes to advise its East Coast customers of a voluntary product recall affecting only limited batches of four CANIDAE dry dog foods made only at one facility in South Carolina between December 9, 2011 and January 31, 2012.
CANIDAE has decided to initiate a voluntary product recall for the CANIDAE Dry Dog Foods listed below. We made this decision solely as a precaution. NO CANIDAE products have tested positive for Salmonella. Please check the list of production codes and dates below to determine if you have any of the recalled products.
CANIDAE Dry Dog Foods are manufactured at several plants across the US. Some products are manufactured for CANIDAE by Diamond Pet Foods, at their Gaston, South Carolina plant. This plant has recently recalled some of its Diamond brand products due to the potential for Salmonella contamination.
There have been no positive test results for Salmonella on CANIDAE products. There have been no complaints of illness reported to us.
CANIDAE has made the decision to voluntarily recall from the market place a specific and limited production run of products manufactured at the Diamond South Carolina facility from December 9, 2011, through January 31, 2012.
The only CANIDAE products subject to this recall are as follows. No canned products, cat food products or treats are being recalled. Only a limited production run of these dry dog foods products manufactured in the Diamond South Carolina facility from December 9, 2011, through January 31, 2012 are being recalled:
Diamond Pet Food recalls several brands of food
  • CANIDAE Dog Dry Dog Food, All Life Stages
  • CANIDAE Dog Dry Dog Food, Chicken Meal & Rice
  • CANIDAE Dog Dry Dog Food, Lamb Meal & Rice
  • CANIDAE Dog Dry Dog Food, CANIDAE Platinum
All consumers who have purchased the CANIDAE Dry Dog Foods listed above, manufactured out of the Gaston, South Carolina facility with the specific production and “Best Before” codes on their bags listed above should discontinue feeding the product immediately and return the unused portion to your local independent retailer. Please avoid touching the food, use caution in handling the bags, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water after handling.
The recall affects only products distributed in the following Eastern U.S. states and were manufactured at the Diamond Pet Food Gaston, South Carolina plant. Further distribution to other pet food channels may have occurred.
Florida, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee
We apologize for any potential issues this may have caused pet owners and their pets and urge you to review the map below. The purple area represents our distributors’ territories where CANIDAE dry dog food made in South Carolina between December 9, 2011, through January 31, 2012 may or may not have been distributed.
The green area of the map is not serviced by distributors who deliver CANIDAE product made at the South Carolina facility. Canidae Pet Foods apologizes for any potential issues this may have caused pet owners and their pets. Please see the links at the top of this page for further information.
The recall notice can be found on the Canidae website.

Wellness Pet Food has recalled some of their food due to salmonella. It’s another one being recalled by Diamond Pet Food. Note to Wellness, please read my open letter to pet food companies. It’s for you!
Tewksbury, Mass. (May 4, 2012) – WellPet LLC announced a voluntary recall of one recipe of Wellness® dry dog food after being notified by Diamond Pet Foods regarding the presence of Salmonella in Diamond’s Gaston, South Carolina facility.
All Wellness products are tested for Salmonella and all lots tested negative prior to shipping to customers. The company is voluntarily recalling the select products below. This voluntary recall is being done out of an abundance of caution as these products were produced at the facility that has been linked to recent recalls of Diamond brand foods due to the threat of Salmonella.
Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer.
The products involved in this voluntary recall are:
Wellness Complete Health® Super5Mix® Large Breed Puppy, 15 lb. and 30 lb. bags and 5 oz. sample bags with best by dates of JAN 9 2013 through JAN 11 2013.
Best by dates (lot codes) can be found on the back of the bag in the bottom right-hand corner.
No other WellPet recipes, sizes or brands of food are impacted by this voluntary recall.
“As a pet parent myself, I know how important peace of mind is when it comes to the health of our pets, and that is why we require that all of our products undergo testing for Salmonella, among other things,” said Tim Callahan, chief executive officer of WellPet, the maker of Wellness® products. “All of these lots tested negative prior to being released for sale. We are voluntarily taking this additional step to further safeguard our dogs and to put our customers’ minds at ease.”
The majority of Wellness natural products for pets are produced in WellPet’s own modern state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Mishawaka, Indiana. WellPet no longer purchases any products from Diamond Pet Foods.
Pet owners who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, would like replacement product or have additional questions, may call us at (877) 227-9587 (Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM through 6:00 PM Eastern time and Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 AM through 5:00 PM Eastern time).
For more information see Wellness, and for more on the Diamond recalls see the Diamond Pet Recall website.

taste of the wild pet food recall 2012As expected, here is the pet food recall from Taste of the Wild. It’s part of the Diamond Pet Food recall, due to salmonella. Congrats TOTW for dump and run recall #3 for tonight. (FYI, that was sarcasm. TOTW, be sure to read my open letter to pet food companies. It’s for you too!)
Diamond Pet Foods, Manufacturer of Taste of the Wild Pet Food, Issues Voluntary Recall of Dry Pet Food
Recall is limited to product manufactured between December 9, 2011 through April 7, 2012 and distributed to 16 states and Canada
05/04/12
Diamond Pet Foods, manufacturer of Taste of the Wild Pet Food, has issued a voluntary recall of limited batches of their dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011, and April 7, 2012 due to Salmonella concerns. We do not have any confirmed reports of pet illnesses.

Dear Diamond Pet Foods, Natural Balance, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, and all other pet food companies who post recalls on Friday nights or holidays,
Friday night dump and run pet food recall announcements piss me off! Rather than posting recalls and making sure you have a staff to answer calls from concerned, even frantic, pet owners you choose to post your pet food recalls then hit the doors. That’s pretty darn cowardly and downright disrespectful. You’re essentially telling the people who support you that there’s a good chance they may be feeding their pets food that will make them sick, or even kill them. And that it might do the same to them. Then you turn around and say, “but I don’t have time to talk to you about it right now.” What a slap in the face to everyone who has patronized your company!
I find it quite ironic that you can keep someone late at work to post a recalls like you did this evening, (Diamond Pet Food, Natural Balance), but you can’t keep people late to take calls from pet owners like Sam. Take a look at this comment on an earlier blog post, and tell me if it give you a warm fuzzy feeling about Diamond Pet Food. My guess is that it won’t…
Seriously, over the weekend! My doggies have no food for dinner and I cant get out! Not to mention my sensitive dog that cant eat MOST foods!? I will either starve them or have the squirts to deal with if I change their food! Then to read the warning about handling the food, I have had major cramping and the poops for 2 days, My husband has a compromised Immune system, and our 2 year old plays in the dog food bin all the time and eats it! He has had the poops on and off for months of course now being very severe and I know our last bag was one of the recalled! What am I supposed to do? They say even coming in contact with a pet thats eaten it is bad… We have 3 dogs and 2 small kids! Are we supposed to leave the dogs out? And seriously on a Friday evening- SHAME ON THEM!!!!!!!!!
Many of you pet food companies spout off about how much you care about your customers and the pets who rely on your food. But your actions speak a hell of a lot louder than words.
Diamond, you say you are doing the recalls to “ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.” If you were really concerned about the your customers’ well-being, you’d understand that peace of mind is part of that well-being, and would be there to answer questions 24/7 when there’s a recall issued. And you, Natural Balance, signed your notice with “Your Natural Balance Family.” Really? Would you deliver bad news to somebody in your family and then split? If so, I’m sure glad I’m not in your family!
Come on, show some respect and common decency for the people who have built your business. If you have to have recalls, do them in a timely manner, and have people available to answer the phones. I don’t care if it’s 2 a.m. and you have to pay people to work overtime to answer the phone. Get over it! People like Sam deserve to be able to pick up a phone and talk to someone. Not Monday, but NOW! It may not seem like an emergency to you – and it may not be – but to Sam it IS an emergency! Being told to wait until Monday is disrespectful and downright sleazy. Put on your big girl pants. Grow a pair. Do the right thing and let your actions say the same thing as your words!

We are working diligently to make this process as seamless as possible for you, our retailers and consumers.
Although there have been no animal or human illnesses related to Canidae Pet Food, and the product has not tested positive for Salmonella, the company has voluntarily initiated this recall out of caution to ensure the health and safety of consumers and their pets.
Following is an example of how to read the production code and best before date:
